‘MISSION FIRST, MEN ALWAYS’ - S.C. Lt. Gov. candidate receives endorsement from Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely, former FOX News military analyst

By W. Thomas Smith, Jr.

Rarely do I publicly endorse candidates for political office, though I have often expressed disdain for political candidates and elected officials (please don’t get me started on that nest of usurpers on Capitol Hill). But there are in fact times when the integrity of a candidate seems so unshakeable, that I cannot help but rally around his or her campaign.

Case in point, U.S. Army Res. Lt. Col. Bill Connor, who is running for lieutenant governor of South Carolina.

I won’t get into the myriad particulars of why I’m backing Bill [you can read why here], but I believe the primary reason may best be gleaned from an email exchange this weekend between retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely, one of the nation’s leading military analysts, and Bill, especially Bill’s response when he says, “‘Mission First, Men Always’ and ‘Leaders Eat Last.’”

Those words reflect the fundamental underpinnings of military leadership – actually, any kind of leadership – I’ve been preaching for most of my adult life. And to hear a political candidate actually say it is heartening in the current political environment, because such expressions are never made insincerely.

Soldiers understand this, which is why Gen. Vallely, who lives in Montana, is endorsing a Palmetto State candidate. It’s also why Bill has already received endorsements from 12 general-officers, most from S.C., scores of field-grade, company grade, and junior officers, sergeants major, and staff-NCOs and NCOs all the way down to corporal, three of the state’s five living Medal of Honor recipients, and we’re just talking about his military supporters.

At any rate, following is Gen. Vallely’s email to Bill, followed by Bill’s reply.

“Dear Bill:

“Today, I am pleased and proud to announce my early endorsement of your candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. After reviewing your background and your position statements on the critically important issues facing our nation, I have no doubt that you understand the national security and domestic issues facing our great nation and, particularly, the people of South Carolina.

“I trust that you will bring the necessary leadership that we vitally need. We are in dire need of principled public servants who will put loyalty to the Constitution and the principles that guarantee our freedom ahead of party affiliation, money and special interests. I believe you will keep that oath as Lieutenant Governor.

“I commend you for your service and commitment to our Armed Forces and veterans to improve conditions at VA hospitals in the S.C. area. Private citizens such as yourself, who go the extra mile for our veterans, understand that we have a solemn obligation to ensure that our veterans receive the best medical attention and care that our nation can provide as a small debt of our gratitude for the sacrifices they have made on our behalf; and for your efforts in this regard, I thank you.

“We wish you Godspeed in your campaign. I will be encouraging others to support your candidacy in the forthcoming election. You may communicate my endorsement to the voters of South Carolina as you see fit.

“Paul E. Vallely
“Maj. Gen., U.S. Army, Ret.”

——–

“Gen. Vallely,

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your endorsement and words of support/encouragement. I have followed you for some time and greatly respect your analysis on FOX News and conservative commentary defending principles we hold dear.

“As the son, grandson, and great-grandson of career Army officers, I have been an infantry officer for 20 years (since graduating from The Citadel). I will bring the leadership principles we have learned in places like Ranger School, the Middle East, Korea, Afghanistan, Vietnam (in your background and my father’s experience): ‘Mission First, Men Always’ and ‘Leaders Eat Last.’ Thank you so much for understanding and helping me in this calling.

“I promise you I will fight for veterans in this state.  South Carolina has the highest number of veterans, per capita, and yet has a long way to go in taking care of them. I will. And I will not let you down. Thank you again.

“Sola Fide,
“Bill”

——–

Bill’s “Sola Fide” means faith alone, and as I said in my own endorsement on Feb. 23, “The great Swedish warrior king Gustavus Adolphus once said, ‘A good Christian will never make a bad soldier.’”

Iran Gaining Backdoor Access to U.N. Security Council

Lebanon’s Naharnet is today reporting, “Iran has suggested to Lebanon in its status as non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council [UNSC] to work on a draft resolution that calls on Israel to stop using force against Palestinians.”

Frankly, Iran has no business “suggesting” (if truth be known, “directing”) Lebanon to draft anything. But the article reflects something even more disturbing, and that is Lebanon’s non-permanent UNSC membership is – as we have reported – providing Iran and its proxy army, Hizballah, a backdoor opening onto the United Nations Security Council.

Naharnet continues, “An Nahar newspaper said that the proposal came in a letter written by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to his Lebanese counterpart Ali al-Shami. Iran’s charge d’affaires delivered the letter to al-Shami on Friday.”

Sources told An Nahar that al-Shami would “inform” Lebanese Pres. Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Saad Hariri as soon as the letter was delivered, and that the Lebanese cabinet would consider the matter.

A dangerous precedent to say the least, but not surprising. Meanwhile, Rome fiddles.

Fifth-Generation Fighter makes First-ever Hover and Vertical Landing

Posted by editor on 18 March 2010 at 7:14 pm UTC

A STOVL (short take-off and vertical landing) version of the super-stealthy F-35 Lightning II made its first-ever vertical landing today, after a first-ever hover yesterday.

According to Lockheed Martin, the fighter “rode more than 41,000 pounds of thrust to a vertical landing today for the first time, confirming its required ability to land in confined areas both ashore and afloat.

“‘Today’s vertical landing onto a 95-foot square pad showed that we have the thrust and the control to maneuver accurately both in free air and in the descent through ground effect,’ said F-35 Lead STOVL Pilot Graham Tomlinson.

“Tomlinson performed an 80-knot (93 miles per hour) short takeoff from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., at 1:09 p.m. EDT. About 13 minutes into the flight, he positioned the aircraft 150 feet above the airfield, where he commanded the F-35 to hover for approximately one minute then descend to the runway. …

“The F-35B will replace U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B STOVL fighters and F/A-18 strike fighters. The United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, and the Italian Air Force and Navy will employ the F-35B as well. With its short takeoff and vertical landing capability, the F-35B will enable allied forces to conduct operations from small ships and unprepared fields, enabling expeditionary operations around the globe.”

A video clip of yesterday’s hover may be accessed here.

PRE-ORDER RITA COSBY’S NEW BOOK, ‘QUIET HERO: SECRETS FROM MY FATHER’S PAST’

Posted by editor on 18 March 2010 at 2:55 pm UTC

Quiet Hero

An email from W. Thomas Smith Jr. (dated March 17) to family, friends, and colleagues,

Rita Cosby, a New York Times bestselling author and Emmy® award-winning journalist, has written a new book, Quiet Hero: Secrets from My Father’s Past, a truly amazing tale of her father, his service in the Polish Resistance during WWII, his survival and escape from a Nazi POW camp, Rita’s uncovering the hidden story of her hero-father, and the two of them returning to his native Poland.

I’ve had the opportunity to read the manuscript (as one of Rita’s “military experts”), and I am convinced it will quickly appear on the New York Times bestseller list as did her first book.

From the standpoint of military history, this is a tale of the greatness of Poland that has never been told.

I don’t say this because Rita is my friend (though that does make it easier).

I say this because I know you will not be able to read this book without being emotionally moved throughout, yet cheering at the end, and walking away from it – you will be able to read it in a night — a more soulfully enriched human being, grateful for what other human beings do for us.

QUIET HERO will be released May 18, but I’m hoping you will pre-order a copy now.

Let me add, a portion of all proceeds go to help wounded warriors.

Click here to view the book cover and pre-order your copy.

Thanks and best,
WTS
