Lebanon’s Naharnet is today reporting, “Iran has suggested to Lebanon in its status as non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council [UNSC] to work on a draft resolution that calls on Israel to stop using force against Palestinians.”

Frankly, Iran has no business “suggesting” (if truth be known, “directing”) Lebanon to draft anything. But the article reflects something even more disturbing, and that is Lebanon’s non-permanent UNSC membership is – as we have reported – providing Iran and its proxy army, Hizballah, a backdoor opening onto the United Nations Security Council.

Naharnet continues, “An Nahar newspaper said that the proposal came in a letter written by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to his Lebanese counterpart Ali al-Shami. Iran’s charge d’affaires delivered the letter to al-Shami on Friday.”

Sources told An Nahar that al-Shami would “inform” Lebanese Pres. Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Saad Hariri as soon as the letter was delivered, and that the Lebanese cabinet would consider the matter.

A dangerous precedent to say the least, but not surprising. Meanwhile, Rome fiddles.
